Connecting and Communicating as a Mentor

Communication

Mentoring is an art – the art of connecting and communicating. Mentoring is not age bound. It is based on life experience and the opportunity and willingness to share how experiences have shaped decisions, good and bad.

Connecting – one of the greatest values a mentor provides is to serve as an ally to the person. You must listen without judgment. You must encourage without caveats. You must demonstrate empathy and compassion without losing objectivity.

Communicating – as a mentor, it is accepted that you know what you’re doing; what is critical is the ability to clearly explain what you know–and why it is relevant. It is important to be prepared, to offer constructive feedback and be willing to debate and discuss the topic so the person can make a decision on the best course of action.
